Assignment 16 - Ethan Scutchfield

Epstein, Richard A. “Why Labor Unions Are Inefficient Monopolists.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 23 March 2009, www.forbes.com/2009/03/23/labor-unions-monopolists-opinions-columnists-efca.html?sh= c141dba2d126.

This is generally an argument against unions and makes the argument that they are inefficient monopolies that hurt workers by harming the free market and not creating a competitive market that doesn’t allow workers to be paid. This can be used as a opposing argument to my other sources and is an example of an opposing viewpoint when it comes to labor and how Unions operate.

This is a picture of an advertisement made by Delta against Unions that says that the Union costs of 700 dollars a year are not worth it and that people should just sped that money on video games instead. This is just a small example that shows that businesses have a vested interest in making sure unions are seen as something that is pointless and to prevent people from being willing to form a Union. This can be used to show the general disdain from big corporations towards unions as they generally prevent companies from abusing their workers by forcing them to follow guidelines for workers.

This was a study encompassing 18 countries that covered 50 years. The study found that trickle down economics, the idea that wealth will ‘trickle down’ after giving business owners and corporations tax cuts, does not actually cause wealth to move down towards non corporations and in fact just increases income inequality and don’t have any effect on economic growth and unemployment.

Panagopoulos, Costas, and Peter L. Francia. "The polls—trends: Labor unions in the United States." Public Opinion Quarterly 72.1 (2008): 134-159.

This article is about how despite recent developments that seem to show that labor unions are in decline they still maintain public support from people even if they’re skeptical about their leaders and the trust they can put into them. This is an example of how labor unions are still seen as something that is needed and is supported to protect the rights of workers and are still important within the public consciousness

WTF Happened In 1971?, wtfhappenedin1971.com/.

This is a source of statistics that generally show a general trend towards workers being exploited and wages for people becoming stagnated even as productivity increases and how generally most expenses are skyrocketing even though wages for people are stagnating and that is creating problems for people. This can be used for examples as to why their needs to be more actions taken to help the american workers and how they need help for the situation that people are in and how it hurts everybody but the people who make the most money already.
