I LOVE musicals. I could talk about them for hours and hours and hours. Especially Sondheim musicals. The ones based on movies and stuff like Beetlejuice, and Mean Girls are fine but they don’t really have any deeper meanings. The older musicals (particularly from the 80s, a wonderful time period for musicals), typically have more commentary on deeper issues and are more subtle about it so it isn’t shoved down your throat. Honestly it seems like some of the musicals based off of movies are more cash grabs than anything else. Sunday in the Park With George is probably my favorite musical. It has an absolutely GORGEOUS score, with beautiful and clever lyrics. Sondheim has a way with putting puns into his songs and also making them really fast but they always work really well. He can make them slow when he needs to as well though, whatever suits the moment. His music and lyrics also work really well to actually move the story along instead of just being filler.
