Blog Post #11- Emma Snyder

There is a German word, schadenfreude, which means “pleasure derived from someone else's misfortune.” It’s not necessarily a nice thing but I think everyone feels it whether they’d like to admit it or not. Like when you see a straight A student getting Bs. It’s a bit comical for you as the outsider because a B is still good but they’re freaking out because they’re used to perfection. You feel bad about it, but you have to admit things like that can be funny. Like seeing someone trying to read and figure out a map. Like you’re glad you’re not them. Which leads me to the other side- even if you’re the person suffering leading to others happiness, at least you can think about how you’re making someone happy even if you’re personally having a bad time. A little way to see some positives in a negative situation and also it’s just a fun word to say and joke about.
